At quarter to six she was packed and on the highway to Coeur d’Alene, wearing a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt over her two-piece bathing suit. Years of experience had taught her to go out on a lake prepared for any eventuality.

The sky was lightly overcast, which could mean anything this early in the day. She pulled into the marina with its array of campers, vehicles and boat trailers, and discovered Nick waiting for her in the cab of a Ford pickup with the Kaniksu Lumber insignia on the door. Behind the truck was a twenty-one-foot olive-green-and-white Fiberform with a semi-flat hull, the perfect boat for exploring out-of-the-way places. At the moment, the fabric top was up, but it could easily be lowered if the sun came out.

Nick levered himself from the truck, and she saw that he was dressed in navy sweatpants and a matching T-shirt, clothing that did nothing to conceal his impressive build. His dark hair was still damp from the shower, curling at his neck and forehead. And there was a tiny spot on his chin where he must have nicked himself shaving. “Five minutes at the most.” His disinclination to talk aggravated the tension between them.

Brushing the palm of one hand fitfully against her thigh she said, ’’If you’ll get the cooler out of the back, I’ll bring the other things and we can get started.”

He didn’t back away from the door. ’’If we haven’t completed our search by dark, would you be opposed to camping overnight on the boat and continuing our search tomorrow? I’ve brought extra provisions and sleeping gear.”

His question might have sounded casual to someone else, but in the undertones Heather heard the urgency of his request. He was desperate to find Branko and didn’t want to waste precious time bringing her back to the marina if their one-day quest proved futile. To explore both rivers, as well as the camping areas along the shoreline of the lake, could take time, probably more than one day.

She’d certainly been camping with other men. But Branko’s
